Embracing the Natural Hair Journey: Balancing Life and Healthy Hair

A Journey of Growth, Patience, and Self-Love

If there’s one thing I’ve learned on my natural hair journey, it’s that this isn’t just about hair—it’s about self-discovery, patience, and redefining beauty on my own terms. As a  woman in my late 30s, life is already a balancing act—working, taking care of family, handling responsibilities, and somehow finding time to take care of myself. Add maintaining natural hair into the mix, and some days, it feels like I just can’t keep up. But I’ve also realized something important: my hair is a reflection of how I care for myself, and that means prioritizing its health just like I would any other part of my well-being.

The Beginning: Unlearning and Relearning Haircare

I didn’t always have the best relationship with my hair. Like many of us, I grew up believing that long, healthy hair was only achievable if it was straightened, relaxed, or “tamed.” The idea of truly nurturing my curls and coils seemed like an impossible task. But once I decided to embrace my natural hair, I had to unlearn so much—how to properly moisturize, how to protect my strands, and most importantly, how to listen to what my hair actually needs.

Let me tell you, sis—it wasn’t easy. There were days when I felt frustrated, when my twist-out didn’t come out right, or when my hair seemed to have a mind of its own. But I kept going, because healthy hair is about consistency, not perfection.

Balancing Haircare with Everyday Life

Being in my 30s means I don’t always have hours to dedicate to my hair. Between work, family, and personal goals, a quick and efficient routine is essential. Here’s what I’ve learned about keeping my natural hair healthy without letting it take over my schedule:

  1. Keep It Simple – There was a time when I thought I needed a 10-step routine with expensive products to see results. Now? I stick to the basics: cleanse, condition, moisturize, and protect. Less is more!

  2. Protective Styles Are a Lifesaver – Life gets busy, and I don’t always have time to style my hair every morning. That’s where protective styles like braids, twists, and wigs come in handy. They give me a break while keeping my hair tucked away and growing.

  3. Moisture Is Everything – Natural hair thrives on moisture, and I’ve learned to never let my strands go thirsty. A good leave-in conditioner and sealing oil (like my trusty Reign Drops Growth Oil) keep my hair soft and manageable throughout the week.

  4. Listen to Your Hair – One thing I’ve stopped doing is forcing styles that don’t work for me. If my hair loves wash-and-go's more than twist-outs, that’s what I stick with. If my scalp needs extra care, I give it attention. My hair tells me what it needs—I just have to listen.

  5. Give Yourself Grace – There will be days when you don’t have time to deep condition, when your hair feels dry, or when life just gets in the way. And that’s okay. The key is to be consistent in the long run, even if you miss a wash day here and there.

The Beauty of the Journey

One of the most beautiful things about embracing my natural hair is that it’s an ongoing journey. I’ve watched my hair get stronger, healthier, and longer—not because of magic products, but because I committed to learning and loving it. My hair is a crown, a symbol of my resilience, and a reminder that Black hair is beautiful in all its forms.

To my fellow busy queens out there: your natural hair journey is yours to embrace at your own pace. Whether you’re just starting or years in, give yourself grace, stay consistent, and most importantly, enjoy the process.

If you're looking for clean, nourishing products to simplify your routine, I always say: start with the basics. A gentle cleanser, a hydrating conditioner, and a rich growth oil can make all the difference. I personally swear by Reign Clouds Conditioner and Reign Drops Growth Oil to keep my strands soft and thriving.
